    "Susie in the Bag"

  • About my Art

    I will try any subject

I started painting as a hobby about the same time I retired from being a public school music teacher in 2005. I always had a desire to try my hand at painting but I never got around to it until my wife surprised me by purchasing some lessons with local artist Sharon Rachal. Once I started I have continued to this day. I love all the possibilities of art mediums and subject matter and even though I have concentrated my efforts in two dimensional fine art, I appreciate all art and like to think I gain more experience and knowledge when I am exposed to other artists' work. I feel I can always improve my art. When you look at my gallery please note that I don't dwell on any one subject in my art. I will try any subject or technique.

    Thanks for being here, Alan

    Alan's Background

I retired in 2005 and about the same time started to painting. I started using oils then moved to acrylics. I now use both mediums for different purposes, and sometimes use acrylics first to lay down my values and then finish in oils to get more of that blending effect. I like to think of myself as an expressive realist. I use my photos as a guide to the subject matter but I try to capture the mood or story in my painting.

I have been a member of the Yucaipa Valley Art Association since the year I started painting.

I've been a board member of YVAA many years and have been Photo Historian and at present, Vice President and Program Chairman of YVAA.

Most of my paintings depict a scene or place that my wife and I have been to in our travels to complete a marathon (26.2 miles) in all fifty states plus our experiences in Coquille, Oregon where we enjoy the summers. I guess I do like to paint Lighthouses.

"I credit my wife Judy for being supportive to my many paths to enrichment. I most likely would not be the artist I am today without her critiques, and encouragement."
